Maple Tree (Independence of Mind) -- no ordinary person, full of imagination and originality, shy and reserved, ambitious, proud, self-confident, hungers for new experiences, sometimes nervous, has many complexities, good memory, learns easily, complicated love life, wants to impress.

Kalau sedang mood, kita bisa seharian nongkrong di depan monitor, mengutak-atik desain dalam keasyikan. Dan hebatnya, mood yang bagus akan membuat output kreatif kita benar-benar bagus bahkan kadang lebih bagus dari yang diharapkan. Mood ini sangat diperlukan untuk menghasilkan karya yang di atas standar, yang bukan asal jadi. Tapi datangnya mood sering tidak terduga. Dalam situasi tertentu, mood bahkan menguap hilang selama berhari-hari meninggalkan kita dalam dalam kebuntuan ide.
Saya punya pengalaman buruk menyangkut manajemen mood. Saya pernah gagal mengisi rubrik Salvo di edisi 4 Blank! magazine (alm.) gara-gara ide yang macet meskipun telah nongkrong di depan komputer dan baca buku macem-macem, seminggu penuh. Saya tidak tahu harus diapakan seluruh bahan yang sudah terkumpul itu. Pada detik terakhir deadline, akhirnya saya menyerah dan rubrik tetap itupun sukses tergusur artikel yang lain.
Satu lagi ketika menyiapkan tulisan ini, lama sekali saya memikirkan tulisan yang pas sampai kemarin malam saya masih belum tahu mau nulis apaan. Apalagi mikirin ilustrasinya mau pake apa. Barulah menjelang deadline, saya dipaksa oleh kondisi waktu yang tinggal sedikit itu sedemikian rupa sehingga katup yang membuatnya buntu tiba-tiba jebol tanpa saya tahu bagaimana prosesnya. It’s just happened. Saya cuma tahu dari bukti otentiknya: tulisan ini bisa tersaji di hadapan Anda sekalian.
Nah, saya yakin mereka yang mengaku (atau tidak mengaku) dirinya kreatif pernah mengalami kebuntuan semacam itu, seperti pengarang yang kehilangan kata atau pelukis yang kehilangan imajinasi warna. Bagaimana mengatasinya?
Yang harus saya ingatkan sebelumnya adalah, mood tidak bisa didatangkan serta merta kapanpun ia dibutuhkan. Yang bisa kita lakukan adalah menciptakan kondisi-kondisi dimana mood itu mudah muncul untuk selanjutnya bisa menghidupkan élan kreativitas kita. Ada beberapa hal yang bisa kita lakukan, diantaranya:
Menentukan Tujuan yang Jelas
Dalam memecahkan masalah, akan lebih simple jika kita memahami batasan-batasannya. Sehingga kita tidak berfikir terlalu luas. Kita bisa berfokus pada upaya problem solving jika tujuan yang akan kita capai jelas. Tujuan itu akan memandu otak kita secara sadar maupun tak sadar untuk mencari jalan keluar atas permasalahan yang kita hadapi. Ide atau solusi akan datang seperti sebuah cahaya yang menerobos lubang kecil dalam sebuah ruang yang gelap. “Eureka!” kata Archimedes.
Menyelesaikan Pekerjaan Sampai Tuntas
Penyakit yang bisa menimbulkan kebuntuan ide adalah kebiasaan menunda-menunda pekerjaan. Atau melaksanakannya setengah-setengah. Terutama jika ada beberapa pekerjaan yang sedang kita laksanakan bersamaan. Tanpa prioritas yang tepat, ini semua akan menjadi beban yang menghalangi otak berpikir jernih sehingga kebingungan mana yang harus diselesaikan lebih dahulu. Semakin banyak pekerjaan yang bisa kita tuntaskan sesuai sesuai jadual, semakin ringan beban otak kita dan mood-pun akan lebih sering muncul. Menunda pekerjaan, no way!
Menciptakan Atmosfir Kreatif
Penting juga untuk menciptakan suasana kerja dan lingkungan yang kondusif agar mood bisa sering datang. Atmosfir kreatif itu akan membuat fisik dan psikis kita menjadi nyaman dan tidak tertekan. Ada yang mengatakan bahwa ruang kerja yang berantakan menandakan seseorang itu kreatif. Saya tidak menyalahkan penilaian tersebut, asalkan penghuni ruangan itu tidak mengalami kesulitan ketika mencari ballpoint, macbook atau halaman buku tertentu akibat banyaknya barang lain yang berserakan.
Karena kebersihan dan kerapian tempat kerja akan sangat berguna untuk merangsang otak kita menata file informasi di dalamnya sehingga mudah diakses kapanpun kita butuhkan. Karena rapid an teratur, tempatnya jadi mudah dilacak. Analoginya hampir sama dengan harddisk yang sering di-defrag dengan yang tidak.
Berfikir Berbeda
Berhubungan dengan ruangan yang bersih dan tertata, tidak ada salahnya juga pada suatu ketika sengaja dibikin berantakan jika telah mulai menimbulkan kebosanan. Ruangan tersebut bisa ditata ulang dengan cara yang berbeda, untuk menumbuhkan tunas mood yang baru. Manusia kreatif adalah makhluk yang dinamis, yang tidak begitu nyaman dengan rutinitas yang itu-itu saja.
Sekali waktu, pergilah ke tempat yang belum pernah dikunjungi, saksikan film-film indie dari Afrika atau Italia (yang non Hollywood), duduk sendirian di tengah lapangan sepak bola, berbicara dengan orang asing, tidur di kamar mandi, avonturir dari kota ke kota lain tanpa bekal, dan lain sebagainya. Agak aneh mungkin buat orang kebanyakan, tapi hal-hal seperti ini akan menyegarkan otak kita dengan, serta melatihnya untuk melihat sesuatu dengan perspektif yang berbeda.
Saya menonton film Jerry Maguire-nya Tom Cruise sekitar sepuluh kali. Ada banyak adegan, perkataan atau ekspresi wajah unik yang terlewatkan ketika saya baru menontonnya pertama kali. Saya bisa menemukan ‘keindahan’ itu setelah menontonnya berkali-kali. Dan memikirkannya dengan cara yang berbeda.
Berani Gagal
Tidak semua gagasan kreatif bisa diwujudkan dengan baik. Kegagalan adalah hal yang manusiawi dan dapat menjadi pelajaran terbaik. Dibutuhkan toleransi yang cukup atas kegagalan sehingga kita bisa mencapai kesuksesan di kesempatan berikutnya. Kegagalan tidak menjadi persoalan yang besar, selama kita telah melaksanakan yang terbaik semampu kita.
Bill Gates (Chairman Microsoft Corp.) pernah mengatakan: When you’re failing, you’re forced to creative, to dig deep and think hard, night and day. Every company needs people who have been trough that, who have made mistakes and then made their mistakes as a great lesson to be better. Jika engkau gagal, engkau akan dipaksa untuk jadi kreatif, untuk menggali lebih dalam dan berfikir lebih keras, siang dan malam. Setiap perusahaan membutuhkan orang-orang yang pernah gagal, yang membuat kesalahan dan menggunakan kesalahannya itu sebagai pelajaran terbesar untuk jadi lebih baik.
